BACKPrickly pet fad

Thursday, 15 may 2008

Forget getting a big wet lick from your pet dog when you get home from school, the latest pet craze sweeping the UK is for African pygmy hedgehogs. The tiny prickly creatures come in 92 different colours and are being bought for up to £300 by people who want to keep them as their pets. One breeder says people they are popular because they are nocturnal which means they come out to play at night when most families are getting home from school and work. But animal experts are worried that these little hedgehogs do not make good pets because they need very careful looking after and a special diet. For the lowdown on animals that do make good pets and how to look after them have a look at the Animal Action Club, which is the part of the RSPCA, website for under-13s: www.rspca.org.uk
